Portugal changes its migration rules: what you need to know

Portugal is tightening its immigration requirements. "The era of irresponsible immigration policy is over," said Minister António Leitão Amaro, addressing parliament ahead of the vote.

Parliament passed a law under which only highly skilled professionals will be eligible for a job-seeker visa. Family reunification has also gotten harder: waiting times are longer, and procedures have been shifted to consulates.

Europe swings right: how attitudes toward migration are shifting

These measures are just one piece of a much bigger trend — Europe is gradually shifting rightward. Laws are getting stricter, and there's a growing emphasis on national interests and control. For émigrés, that means more risk and a longer road to citizenship.

How to adapt your strategy to the new reality

So what do you do about it?
Don't build your strategy around the rules of a single country. Liberal today, restrictive tomorrow. You need to think about diversification ahead of time: backup residency options, flexibility in your tax and immigration strategy, and don't put off filing paperwork in countries where the window of opportunity is still open.

If you're thinking about relocating — don't wait.
