How AI Is Affecting Our Critical Thinking
How AI Affects Your Ability to Think for Yourself
I recently came across a great study on generative AI — researchers looked at how ChatGPT and its ilk affect the critical thinking of people who work with their heads.
The results are inspiring on one hand and a little unsettling on the other.
Here's what I found out:
1. Blind trust in AI switches your brain off
People who are 100% confident in AI's answers barely check them at all. They just copy and paste. And that's already a slippery slope toward a switched-off brain.
2. Self-confidence helps preserve critical thinking
People who don't feel "dumber" than the AI use it as an assistant instead of a boss. They check it, question it, correct it.
3. AI changes the thinking process itself
You used to look for information yourself. Now you check what the AI came up with. Less "creating," more "editing."
4. What kills critical thinking: fatigue, rushing, and laziness
When a deadline is looming, you have neither the energy nor the desire to argue with the AI. And if you're not an expert on the topic, it's hard to tell where the AI is messing up.
5. The most dangerous thing: slipping into autopilot
If you lean on AI as a crutch for too long, you can gradually forget how to think for yourself — especially on repetitive tasks.
Bottom line: AI is a tool, not your brain
AI is an awesome tool when you use it thoughtfully. But if you just nod along to everything it says, you can genuinely lose the ability to think critically.
